Curly hair care products I currently love

curly hair

I have had naturally curly hair for 6 years now and I can’t tell you how many products I have been through. For us curly haired girls, it’s hard for us to retain moisture, contain the frizz, control the shrinkage and keep the curls detangled. It’s truly the struggle! I recently found 3 products I am loving in my hair right now that combats dryness, shrinkage, frizz and detangles my hair perfectly! Keep on reading if you want to see what curly hair products I got myself into!

Curly Hair Chronicles

Time for another curly hair blog post! In this post I want to share with you my favorite curly hair care products at the moment. Make sure you check out all my other naturally curly hair care posts here.

The Detangler

The detangler I have been obsessed with for the last few months is from Shea Moisture’s Low Porosity Hair line. This is their leave in hair detangler and I fell in love with first use. It creates amazing slip, which surprisingly is hard to find in most detanglers. It is also free from sulfates, parabens and silicones which are a big no no for me!

How I use:

After I condition my hair and rinse the conditioner out, I apply this detangler from root to tip. My hair is also divided in to small sections to thoroughly work the product in. I then use my detangling brush to loosen all those knots!

The Clarifying Shampoo

This is another product from Shea Moisture’s Low Porosity line. I rarely use shampoo but when it comes to clarifying your hair, a shampoo that doesn’t strip all of your hair of oil is very important. This shampoo gives me a deep scalp cleanse as well as leaving my hair feel more moisturized than other shampoos I used in the past. It’s also free of harsh ingredients such as parabens, sulfates and, silicone.

How I use:

I always add shampoo directly to my scalp and I massage my scalp with my forefingers. Once it is time to rinse the shampoo out, I make sure I do not rub my ends. I simply let the water do all the work. Shampoo will still strip the ends and cleanse them just by having the shampoo run off your hair.

The Curl Defining Gel

I absolutely need a good curl defining gel once I hop out the shower to keep my curls popping! Previous gels I used always left my hair crunchy after my hair dried and I hated that feeling. This is the curl defining gel by Design Naturals and it’s their Honey Curl Defining custard infused with chamomile and honey. Honestly the best curl defining custard yet because it does NOT leave my hair crunchy at all! It defines my curls perfectly and adds additional shine and moisture. It also SMELLS AMAZING (sort of like apple sauce haha)

How I use:

After I have a leave in conditioner or detangler in my hair, I add a light weight oil first to my ends. Afterwords, hair still dripping wet, I apply my curl defining gel in SECTIONS. Applying it in sections insures that you are covering every curl and defining them. I do once last brush through with my detangling brush to clump the curls together. I then use the banding method (when I have time) to band my hair to battle shrinkage. I then let my hair air dry until my hair is about 80% dry and then I use a diffuser to dry the rest.

What did you think?

I used to LOVE Shea Moisture but it seems as though the formula has changed. I’m not getting the same results as I did years ago. I know there are other factors to consider, but I even used this on my daughter’s hair and the outcome was just.. different. I’ve also took a break from them, but still nothing. Sigh.

OH wow Rae. hmmmmmm ok, what exact products from shea moisture are you using? Sometimes our hair gets accustomed to the same products after continual use and it just doesn’t work any more. But, maybe the ingredients in their product doesn’t work with your hair chemistry? I know there are a few of shea moisture products that do NOT work for me. For example, any of their products that have coconut or shea butter in it (which is a lot of them) I will not use because my hair does not work well with shea butter and coconut oil. I hope you find something that works for your Rae!
