Study Hacks || Motivation
If you have no motivation to do well in your class, then you are wasting your money, time, and your professor’s time. Let’s be honest, when you are motivated to do well in anything, you try your damn best right!? Well, school takes the same approach and that’s why I have this as my first study hacks tip. What motivates you to do good in your class? What is your career goal? Questions like these help me stay motivated for my end goal. I am driven to do well because I give myself no other choice but to! Find what inspires you. Find the reason why you started graduate school in the first place!
Study Hacks || Planner
Please, please, please invest in a planner! Being organized is one of my favorite study hacks I will share with you today. When you give yourself a plan, time limit, goal, expectations and outcomes, you are more likely to stick to it. Buy yourself a planner and use it to write down homework assignment due dates, test dates, tutoring sessions, project due dates, professor office hours, etc! For me, I hate putting everything in my phone. I find when I take the time to write things down, I remember more! Maybe this may work for you as well!
Study Hacks || Find Your Space
How you choose to study is important but also W H E R E you choose to study is crucial as well. The next out of the study hacks is finding a good location to study. Maybe you prefer the outdoors with a blanket on the grass near a lake. Cafe’s with the smell of coffee in the air may be your favorite place to study or you may be a homebody and like to do your studying in your home. Check out my DIY office for students here and get some ideas on how you can create a space of your own on a budget! Find a place that relaxes you with no interruptions. And put that cell phone on silent 🙂
Study Hacks || Homework Assignments are your Cheat Sheets
The next topic for my study hacks are your homework assignments! I can’t stress this enough! But think about it, how many times have you taken a test and most of the questions are the SAME as your homework questions, with just different numbers or names? This happens a lot in most of my classes. If you use any MY Pearsonlab products for any of your classes. Print out all your homework assignments (the correct answers will always print as well). When it is time to study for your exam, take those printed homework assignments and do you work over again to make sure you understand the question. I guarantee you that most of the questions from your HW will show up on the test!
Study Hacks || Ditch the flashcards and use your Friends
Out of all the study hacks, I use this one the most! I use to be an avid flash card user and honestly, they don’t work for me. If they don’t work for you, try using a friend that knows nothing about the subject you are studying for and make a game out of studying. It can go like this:
1.) Write down all the topics that you know are going to be on the test and place them in a jar
2.) Have a friend (preferably one that knows nothing or little of the subject) pick a topic from the jar
3.) Once the topic is pulled, explain the topic to your friend (in 45 seconds or less!) in a way that he/she will understand from their perspective
4.) Have your friend reply back to you what they learned from your 45 sec understanding of that topic
*If your friend has no idea what they learned in 45 secs, you probably didn’t explain the subject well or worse, you have no idea what the subject means to you! This game will help you understand the topic on your level of understanding and will help you better explain to your peers what that subject entails!
Study Hacks || Caffeine and Snacks
I can’t count how many times I used to fall asleep during studying! Next in the study hacks are, caffeine and snacks to keep you awake and alert! You don’t have to particularly do caffeine, you can do an energy bar, protein shake, candy, I mean anything that keeps Y O U up. Find something small to snack on like fruit or trail mix! Constant sipping and drinking will keep you up and alert for all your studying!
Study Hacks || Tutoring and Professor Office Hours
The next of these study hacks sort of go hand in hand so I will mention them together. I bet you the school you go to now, even online schools, have a tutoring center/person! If you are not comprehending the material, maybe someone else can put it into a better perspective for you! Use your resources guys! Schedule time with a tutor. Also, the professor is always there to help you guys out if you seek it! Professors have office hours where you can maybe take your homework questions to him, one on one, for better understanding. I even asked professors what topics were going to be on the test and what sections should I pay close attention too. Professors are your best friends, get in good with them lol!
Study Hacks || Color Coordinate
Who doesn’t love a little color on your notes? Color coordinating is one the study hacks that will help you remember certain topics when it comes to taking your test. I personally love to color code my homework by definition, formulas, examples, etc. You don’t have to go all out like me but definitely grab some highlighters for your next study session. Highlight the main topics of your study pages. Don’t highlight everything!
Study Hacks || Break up your HW assignments
The last of my study hacks post has to do with planning out your hw assignments by day and not doing it all at once. When you are in graduate school, you are given a syllabus with due dates on them. Guys! Use this to your advantage! If you have a 10 page essay due in 10 days, write a page a day! That way, you are saving time for other things you may want to do and you don’t have to rush 10 pages in one day. This study hack has helped me out by understanding topics better because I take my time before I complete the next part of the assignment. I save time as well and honestly it’s less stress!
Get the Grades you Deserve
I hope that this post helped you ace your next exam! Which was your favorite of the study hacks? Do you have a favorite study hack that I didn’t mention? If so, let me know in the comments below! Until next time…
